Born as a cattle loading
site on the old Rock Island Railroad, McLean grew into a major shipping
port for the railroad. Progress throughout the Texas Panhandle
— especially the
growth of Pampa
— reduced the
importance of the town. The final blow was the construction of I-40
which by-passed the towns businesses. McLean, however, is a very
realistic museum piece for US-66 buffs and, in fact, the head-quarters
of the Texas
Historic
Route 66 Association (located in the Devil’s Rope Museum). Devil's Rope Museum - features the history of barbed wire ("devil's rope") and the significance and impact on the development of the 'Old West'. Lake McClellan – 12 miles west of McLean, this 325 acre lake is blessed with dense woods and abundant animal life. Fishing is allowed and is said to be excellent. The Park features camping with RV hookups and boat ramps (swimming is allowed in the lake). |
