Waynesville, the Haywood County seat, puts on several very
popular fairs but is probably the least tourist-oriented city in the
county. But that is changing. The Loss of several major employers (to
other countries) has changed the economic priorities, here. The many
attractions to be experienced in Waynesville have always been here. Now
they are more important. Our favorite is the Wheels Through Time Museum. Not because of a special interest in cars and motor-cycles but because roads, then highways, are what made not only Western North Carolina but the United States of America. Waynesville, before I-40, was virtually isolated. I-40 brought 18-wheelers, industry and, for a while, a thriving economy. Now, thanks to tourism, it is coming back. |
